A Romantic Garden Wedding at Blithewold Mansion
If rain on your wedding day is good luck, then these two are in for a lifetime of it.
Set on the waterfront in Bristol, Rhode Island, this Blithewold Manor wedding was filled with colorful florals and the kind of joy that reminds you what weddings are truly about. While gentle rain moved through the afternoon, guests embraced the weather with clear umbrellas, creating one of the most romantic garden ceremonies imaginable. Instead of changing the spirit of the day, the rain only made the gardens at Blithewold Mansion & Gardens feel even more magical.
From the very beginning, the couple shared one priority with me:
"We truly just want to have FUN and celebrate with all the people we love and who have supported us throughout the years."
That vision became the focys of the entire celebration. Every decision reflected who they are as a couple, joyful, welcoming, and completely focused on creating an unforgettable experience for their family and friends.
Getting Ready at Blithewold Mansion & Gardens
The morning began with a relaxed start as everyone prepared for the day ahead. The bride wore a stunning Watters wedding gown featuring intricate beaded appliqué paired with a dramatic cathedral-length veil that photographed beautifully throughout the estate.
One of my favorite parts of photographing weddings at Blithewold Mansion & Gardens is the incredible variety of locations. From elegant interiors to the lush gardens surrounding the mansion, every space offers beautiful natural light and stunning backdrops for candid moments and editorial portraits alike.
Documentary Wedding Portraits at Blithewold
After the first look we explored both the gardens and the historic mansion for portraits. Photographing both indoors and outdoors allowed us to create a gallery filled with incredible variety while embracing everything the venue has to offer.
The gardens provided lush greenery, winding pathways, and waterfront views, while the mansion offered timeless architecture and elegant interiors that complemented the couple's classic style.
As a documentary wedding photographer, my goal is always to create portraits that feel effortless you while leaving plenty of room for genuine moments to unfold naturally. Some of my favorite images from the day weren't directed at all, they happened between poses, during little gusts of wind, spontaneous laughter, and those fleeting moments when the couple simply forgot the camera was there.
Colorful Wedding Design Inspired by the Gardens
Rather than leaning into a neutral palette, the couple fully embraced color. Bridesmaids wore vibrant shades of pink, yellow, and green that perfectly complemented the gardens surrounding the estate. Their florals echoed the feeling of a wildflower meadow with rich oranges, cheerful yellows, soft pinks, and greenery woven throughout every bouquet and arrangement.
The colorful design felt effortlessly at home at Blithewold Mansion & Gardens, where blooming gardens and historic architecture create one of the most beautiful wedding venues in Rhode Island.
The day also included several meaningful handmade details created by the groom's sister, Molly. An artist herself, she designed the invitation suites, welcome sign and custom matchbooks!
A Rainy Garden Ceremony at Blithewold Mansion & Gardens
As guests arrived, soft rain began to fall across the gardens. Rather than moving indoors, everyone gathered beneath clear umbrellas for an unforgettable outdoor ceremony surrounded by lush greenery and vibrant florals.
Watching the bride walk down the aisle in her cathedral veil while guests held umbrellas created one of those moments that simply couldn't have been planned.
Sometimes the most memorable wedding photographs come from the moments you never expect, and this ceremony was a perfect reminder that beautiful wedding days aren't defined by perfect weather.
Celebrating at Blithewold Mansion
After the ceremony, guests gathered for cocktail hour before celebrating late into the evening. Heartfelt toasts, joyful dancing, and a packed dance floor perfectly reflected the couple's original vision, to spend the day simply having fun with the people they love most.
