There is something about a New England fall that feels made for a secret garden wedding. The changing leaves, the last of the season’s greenery, and the warmth of autumn create a setting that feels romantic and a little wild. At Elm Bank in Wellesley, Massachusetts, this fall wedding brought that vision to life with woodsy florals, sculptural tree installations, and a palette that felt as though it had been pulled straight from the surrounding gardens.
Elm Bank is one of those venues that lends itself so naturally to a garden inspired celebration. With its winding paths, historic character, and lush grounds, there is a sense of discovery around every corner.
A Secret Garden Wedding at Elm Bank
The vision for this wedding was less about a perfectly manicured garden and more about the romance of something a little more untamed. Woodsy floral arrangements, organic textures, and tree installations brought a sense of scale and movement to the design, creating the feeling of a garden that had grown around the celebration rather than been placed there.
The florals were a particular highlight. Rather than feeling overly polished or structured, they leaned into a more natural, woodland inspired aesthetic. The tree installations added height and dimension, drawing the eye upward and giving the spaces a feeling of being immersed in the landscape.
For couples envisioning a secret garden wedding in Massachusetts, Elm Bank is such a natural fit. The grounds offer a sense of history and romance, while the gardens provide a beautiful backdrop for layered florals, thoughtful design, and a celebration that feels connected to its surroundings. The venue does not need to be transformed into something entirely different. The magic is in building on what is already there.
Autumn Colors and Romantic Bridal Details
Fall weddings have a way of bringing together colors that feel both rich and understated. Deep greens, earthy tones, and the warmth of changing foliage create a palette that feels especially beautiful against the softer details of a wedding day.
I am always drawn to the way personal details can become part of a wedding's visual story. The most memorable images often come from the combination of the larger design and the things that cannot be planned, whether that is the way the light falls through the trees, the movement of a dress, or the colors that naturally come together in a scene.
The getting ready portion of the day offered a quieter beginning before the celebration unfolded. Between the final details, the anticipation of the ceremony, and the moments shared with family, these photographs established the feeling of the day before everyone came together.
A Romantic Fall Wedding Ceremony
The ceremony brought the secret garden inspiration into focus. The organic floral design added a sense of intimacy and scale, making the setting feel immersive while allowing the natural character of Elm Bank to remain part of the story.
This is where the venue really shines for a garden inspired wedding. The grounds already have so much texture and visual interest, and fall adds another layer through its changing foliage and softer seasonal palette. Rather than competing with the surroundings, the design worked alongside them, creating a setting that felt romantic, woodsy, and quietly dramatic.
For couples planning an autumn wedding at Elm Bank, I love the idea of letting the season inform the design. Florals with an organic silhouette, branches and textural greenery, and a palette inspired by the landscape can create a secret garden feeling without making everything too literal.
Cocktail Hour and the In Between Moments
Cocktail hour came with its own little bit of unexpected magic, thanks to a wandering poet who invited guests to share a little about themselves before typing up an original poem on her typewriter. Each one was a small, personal keepsake, capturing a piece of someone's story in a way that felt both nostalgic and entirely fitting for the secret garden inspired celebration.
Fall Wedding Portraits at Elm Bank
One of my favorite things about photographing a fall wedding is the way the season naturally adds depth to a photograph. The changing leaves, muted greens, and warmer tones create a stunning array of colors!
Elm Bank is especially lovely for portraits because the grounds offer so much variety. The gardens provide structure and texture, while the surrounding landscape creates opportunities for images that feel quieter and more intimate. For this wedding, the secret garden aesthetic carried beautifully into the portraits, with the woodsy florals and autumn setting creating a cohesive visual story.
And of course, the bride's red hair felt right at home among the fall colors.
A Secret Garden Inspired Reception
As the evening continued, the secret garden aesthetic carried into the reception through the floral design, organic textures, and thoughtful styling. The tree installations were particularly effective in creating a sense of immersion, bringing the woodsy feeling indoors and making the reception feel like an extension of the garden itself.
This kind of design is one of my favorite approaches to a fall wedding. The combination of sculptural elements, seasonal colors, and organic florals gave the reception a sense of depth and atmosphere. The florist, Floristika, is one of my favorites. They are so talented at what they do!
Once the room filled with guests, the focus naturally shifted from the design to the celebration. The details set the scene, but it is the people, the interactions, and the energy of the evening that bring it all to life.
An Unexpected Cake Cutting Tradition
One of the more memorable moments of the evening was the cake cutting with a sword.
I always love when couples incorporate traditions or details that feel distinctly their own. These are the moments that make a gallery feel specific to the people in it, rather than simply a record of the events that happened.
Dancing Into the Evening
As the evening unfolded, the dance floor brought a livelier energy to the celebration. After a day filled with woodsy florals, autumn colors, and romantic garden details, it was a wonderful shift into a night of celebrating with family and friends.
