I had the joy of photographing Katharine and Steven's engagement session here this summer, and everything about it felt like a beautiful extension of the wedding they’re planning at the Corinthian Yacht Club in Marblehead next year. Their vision for the shoot was coastal, romantic, and refined, something that would pair visually and emotionally with their upcoming seaside celebration.
Editorial Meets Effortless by the Shore
We started the evening on the soft sands of Crane Beach, with golden sunlight filtering through the dunes. Katharine wore a light and breezy Hill House dress, while Steven matched her look effortlessly in a white linen shirt and beige pants. Their looks were perfectly complementary, combining soft, coastal tones with an understated sense of elegance.
As the sun began to dip lower, they changed into a slightly more casual second look: Steven in jeans and a white linen shirt, and Katharine in a white embroidered eyelet dress. Their monochromatic outfits complemented one another beautifully without feeling too matchy, letting the textures and movement of their clothing really shine in the breeze.
The photos captured a blend of editorial composition and real, joyful moments, quiet laughter between poses, natural movement through the sand, and effortless chemistry.
When the Seagulls Attack…
Every session has moment of laughter, and this one was unforgettable: halfway through, we looked back to see seagulls tearing through our bags on the beach. One even made off with a sticky bra from Katharine’s tote! It was equal parts wild and hilarious, and we couldn’t stop laughing once everything was (mostly) recovered.

A quick note for couples dreaming of photos here: Crane Beach is part of The Trustees of Reservations, and they do require a permit for professional photography. I always take care of permitting for my clients, and I’m a member, so no need to worry, just show up and enjoy your session!
Also, if you're planning your session between July and August, come prepared with bug spray. The greenhead flies near the salt marshes can be pretty aggressive this time of year. We dodged a few, but it's definitely something to keep in mind!
