There is something incredibly special about a private estate wedding on the Massachusetts coast.

Beyond the sweeping waterfront views and beautifully designed celebrations, these weddings often carry a sense of history that simply can't be recreated at a traditional venue. This wedding was the perfect example, a day rooted in family traditions, thoughtfully designed with local touches, and centered around the people and places that have shaped the couple's lives.

The morning began at the bride's parents' coastal home, where she got ready surrounded by her family and closest friends. Hair by Shelby White Beauty and makeup by Jennifer Viros Makeup created a timeless bridal look, while she slipped into a classic Jenny Yoo gown from Madeleine's Daughter Bridal Boutique.

Meanwhile, the groom spent the morning getting ready with his closest friends before everyone made their way to the ceremony.

A Traditional Ceremony at St. Lawrence Martyr Parish

The day began with a traditional Catholic ceremony at St. Lawrence Martyr Parish in New Bedford, where the couple exchanged vows surrounded by their family and friends. Established in the early 1900s to serve New Bedford's growing Portuguese community, the parish has been a cornerstone of the city's Catholic heritage for generations. Its soaring ceilings, beautiful stained-glass windows, and stunning architecture created a breathtaking setting for the start of their marriage, honoring both their faith and the significance of the occasion.

After the ceremony, guests made their way to the family's private waterfront estate along the Massachusetts coast for an evening of celebration. While the ceremony marked the beginning of the day, the reception was where generations of family history truly came to life.

A Waterfront Estate Steeped in Family History

The reception wasn't held at just a beautiful coastal property, but a place that has been woven into the bride's family's story for generations. She became the second person in her generation to celebrate their wedding at the family's waterfront estate, continuing a tradition that makes the property far more than just a reception venue.

The connection to the area runs even deeper. Years earlier, the bride's parents celebrated their own wedding just a few homes down the shoreline, making this stretch of coastline the backdrop for decades of family milestones.

Before cocktail hour, we slipped away for portraits at the bride's grandfather's home, another property that has remained in the family over the years. Photographing the couple in a place filled with so much history added another layer of meaning to their images. Surrounded lush hydrangeas waterfront views, and blooming gardens, every photograph reflected not only the beauty of the day but the legacy of the place itself.

One of my favorite portrait locations was a staircase lined with classic New England hydrangeas in full bloom. Their soft blue and white blossoms framed the couple beautifully and felt perfectly at home against the coastal landscape.

Wildflowers, Local Blooms, and a Reception Designed for the Coast

Every detail of the reception felt personal, especially the flowers.

Rather than ordering every stem through traditional floral wholesalers, the bride's mother visited Little State Flower Co., where she hand-picked buckets of seasonal wildflowers specifically for the wedding. Those locally grown blooms were then artfully arranged by Blossom Flowers Mattapoisett, creating floral designs that celebrated the beauty of the season and the surrounding landscape.

The colorful wildflowers paired effortlessly with classic hydrangeas, bringing texture, movement, and a sense of place to every table. Beneath a sailcloth tent, guests dined surrounded by local flowers, candlelight, and sweeping waterfront views, creating a relaxing and beautiful reception space.

An Unforgettable Coastal Dinner

One of the highlights of the evening was undoubtedly the meal.

Smoke and Pickles Catering Co. prepared an incredible farm-to-table dinner featuring freshly smoked meats, beautifully grilled seasonal vegetables, and thoughtfully crafted sides that guests couldn't stop talking about. The food was comforting yet elevated, exactly the kind of meal that encourages everyone to linger around the table just a little longer while sharing stories and celebrating together.

Later in the evening, the couple cut into a beautiful cake from Jojo's Bakery Shop, adorned with fresh flowers that perfectly complemented the reception's organic floral design.

A Celebration That Felt Like Home

One of the things I loved most about this reception was how naturally it reflected the family's life together.

Throughout cocktail hour and the reception, the family dogs wandered happily around the property, greeting guests, lounging in the grass, and occasionally making an appearance on the bride’s dress. It was one of those little moments that couldn't have been planned but made the day feel even more personal.

As the evening unfolded, guests gathered beneath the sailcloth tent for heartfelt toasts before filling the dance floor late into the night. Just before sunset, we stepped away for one final round of portraits along the water, where the golden light illuminated the coastline and the estate behind them. From above, aerial photographs captured the full beauty of the waterfront property, the tent nestled beside the shoreline, and the celebration unfolding below.
