A Classic Pippin Hill Engagement Session

There are few places in Virginia wine country quite as beautiful as Pippin Hill Farm & Vineyards, and getting to photograph an engagement session here is always a special experience. Tucked into the rolling hills of Charlottesville’s wine country, Pippin Hill has become one of the most sought-after wedding venues in the United States, celebrated for its breathtaking views, thoughtful design, and unmistakable sense of place.

This Pippin Hill engagement session with Francesca and Zach was especially meaningful because they are getting married here next June. I am already counting down the days until their wedding, and after spending an evening exploring the property with them, I am even more excited to photograph their celebration.

The Iconic Pippin Hill Hydrangea Path

One of the most magical features of Pippin Hill is its iconic hydrangea path. Each August, the path comes alive with enormous blooms of white hydrangeas, creating one of the most beautiful backdrops for engagement portraits anywhere in Virginia wine country.

The timing of Francesca and Zach’s session happened to coincide with peak hydrangea season, so naturally, we spent a good portion of our evening tucked among the blooms. The scale of the flowers against the couple was incredible, and the winding path creates so many opportunities for beautiful photographs.

There is something particularly special about photographing couples here during this short window each summer. The hydrangeas are fleeting, making an August Pippin Hill engagement session feel like its own little seasonal moment.

One of the things that makes a Pippin Hill engagement session particularly special is that these sessions are exclusive to couples who are getting married at Pippin Hill. It isn't simply a location anyone can book for engagement photos; the experience is reserved for Pippin Hill couples.

That exclusivity makes getting to photograph Francesca and Zach here even more exciting. Their session gave us the chance to slow down, explore the property together, just the three of us, and create photographs that feel connected to the place where they will eventually become husband and wife.

We wandered from the hydrangea path into the vineyards, making our way through the property as the evening unfolded. Pippin Hill offers no shortage of beautiful backdrops, from rows of grapevines to expansive views across the Virginia countryside.

As the evening went on, the light became even more beautiful. Pippin Hill is known for its incredible views, and watching the landscape change as the sun began to set was the perfect way to end the session.

The combination of vineyard views, rolling hills, and warm evening light is exactly what makes Virginia wine country such an incredible setting for engagement photography. After spending so much time surrounded by the hydrangeas, stepping out into the open landscape for sunset gave the session a completely different feeling.

Francesca and Zach were effortless in front of the camera, and I loved the balance of polished editorial portraits and quieter, candid moments throughout their session.

Photographing at Pippin Hill

Pippin Hill holds a pretty special place in my heart as a wedding photographer. It is consistently regarded as one of the top wedding venues in the country, and it is easy to understand why the moment you arrive. Every corner of the property feels intentional, while the surrounding Virginia landscape provides a backdrop that really doesn't need much embellishment.

Getting to photograph a Pippin Hill engagement session is an honor, and getting to return next June for Francesca and Zach's wedding is something I am incredibly excited about. If this engagement session is any indication, their wedding day is going to be something very special.

For now, though, I am happy to have these photographs from one beautiful August evening, the hydrangeas at their peak, the vineyards glowing in the evening light, and two people beginning to get even more excited for the place where they will officially become a married couple.
